Why Growing Small Trees Matter

In the first installment of this series we explained the Right Tree Right Place method, a multi-step strategy for choosing the proper tree for planting in the landscape. One of the most crucial of these steps is gauging the eventual size of the tree. How tall does a tree grow? How wide will the branches spread? The answers to these questions are extremely important to avoid future problems. Fortunately, studies have shown that trees can be classified by their size at maturity. Three major groupings are recognized in this category. They are small, medium and large growing trees. Over the next several articles, we will focus on the relationship between the RTRP and mature tree size. We will start with a look at Small Growing Trees and how they may be the best planting option.
The Philosophy of “Right Tree, Right Place”
Right Tree, Right Place is a preventative strategy. It requires you to assess a site’s environmental constraints—overhead power lines, underground utilities, soil pH, moisture levels, available sunlight, and spatial boundaries—before selecting a tree species.
When you plant a tree whose mature height, spread, and root habits align naturally with the space, you eliminate the need for drastic pruning, costly utility line clearance, or premature removal later in the tree’s lifespan.
What is a small tree?
In the “Right Tree, Right Place” method, a small tree is primarily defined by its expected size at full maturity (i.e. height and canopy spread):
• Mature Height: Reaches a maximum height of 30 feet or less.
• Canopy Spread: Typically maintains a narrow to moderate spread of 15 to 25 feet wide.
• Root Architecture: Features a compact root system designed to minimize damage to pavement, foundations, and underground lines.
Key Benefits of Small Trees
While large shade trees deliver higher total environmental yields (like raw carbon capture), small trees serve a unique and essential operational niche in urban forestry.
Below are the benefits of small trees, which include species such as the dogwoods, redbuds, crabapples, and the Japanese tree lilac.

1. Infrastructure Protection & Grid Reliability
• Utility Line Safety: Small trees rarely grow tall enough to contact overhead conductors, drastically reducing power outages, fire hazards, and the necessity for aggressive “directional” utility pruning.
• Sidewalk & Utility Preservation: Their smaller, less aggressive root networks prevent pavement upheaval (reducing trip hazards/ADA compliance issues) and protect nearby underground pipes and foundations.
2. Versatility in Tight Spatial Constraints
• Narrow Urban Planting Zones: Small trees thrive in tight cutouts, sidewalk tree pits, narrow right-of-ways, and cramped residential setbacks where large shade trees would become structurally constrained.
• Clear Sightlines: Low-profile canopies keep street signage, traffic lights, commercial storefronts, and pedestrian crossings clear and visible.
3. High Ecosystem Value at Ground Level
• Pollinator Corridors: Many small-stature species (e.g., Cercis, Amelanchier, Crataegus, Cornus) bloom profusely, offering crucial early-season nectar and pollen for pollinators in dense urban cores.
• Microclimate Modification: At human eye level, small trees soften harsh urban hardscapes, filter particulate air pollution near pedestrian paths, and block wind or glare around low-rise structures.
4. Lower Lifecycle & Maintenance Costs
• Reduced Pruning Costs: Maintenance requires standard ground-based or short-pole equipment rather than expensive aerial bucket trucks or traffic control permits.
• Lower Storm Damage Risk: Their lower height and compact architecture reduce wind throw and heavy branch failure during severe storm events

Site Assessment Criteria for Small Trees
Under the Right Tree, Right Place philosophy, site assessment for placing small-stature trees focuses on identifying restricted locations where larger trees would conflict with infrastructure:
• Overhead Clearance: Planting directly under or within 20 feet of primary power distribution lines to prevent utility conflicts and severe pruning.
• Horizontal Constraints: Narrow tree lawns or planting strips (3-5 feet wide), tight sidewalk cutouts, or locations within 10–15 feet of building facades.
• Soil Volume: Restricted root zones offering less than 300–400 cubic feet of uncompacted soil.
• Infrastructure Proximity: Proximity to underground utility mains, paved sidewalks and driveways, or foundations where aggressive root systems risk upheaval or damage.
• Safety Sightlines: Corridors near street intersections, stop signs, pedestrian crossings, or low streetlights where low-profile canopies maintain required visual clearance.

Planting a tree on your property is a wise investment. The Right Tree, Right Place strategy proves that thoughtful planning yields far better urban and suburban landscapes than quick fixes. By choosing smaller stock, matching species to site conditions, and executing correct planting techniques, you give your trees the foundation they need to flourish for generations.

SMALL GROWING TREES (300-700 SQUARE FEET CANOPY SPREAD)

EASTERN REDBUD (Cercis canadensis)

Profuse pea-like rosy-pink blossoms directly on bare limbs in early spring; large heart-shaped leaves that turn yellow in fall. This is a small, dapper, low-branching tree with a spreading, flat-topped to rounded crown.

CHINESE DOGWOOD (Cornus kousa)

Long-lasting star-shaped white flower bracts in late spring followed by showy raspberry-like fruit in autumn.  Bark exfoliates with age revealing beautiful wood tissue of different colors. Stout trunk giving rise to long, slender, multi-tiered branching makes this tree an architectural delight in winter.

JAPANESE MAPLE (Acer palmatum)

Delicae palmate leaves in deep wine-red or green color; brilliant scarlet autumn foliage. The Japanese maple is known for its fine-textured, architectural branch structure which is a delight to observe in all seasons.

ALLEGHENY SERVICEBERRY (Amelanchier laevis)

Delicate white spring blooms; edible blue-purple summer berries; smooth silver-gray bark with subtle dark stripping.  The plant can be grown as a tall multi-stemmed shrub or single stem small tree.

JAPANESE TREE LILAC (Syringa reticulata)

Large, fragrant creamy-white flower plumes in early; glossy cherry-like reddish-brown bark. Tree habit is compact, symmetrical rounded canopy.

‘Ivory Silk, ‘Regent’, and ‘Summer Snow’

APANESE FLOWERING CRABAPPLE (Malus floribunda)

This species is an old favorite, stillone of the best Malus species for urban landscapes.  The plant has 1” wide flowers that bloom in late spring.  The fruit is a yellow to red berry appearing in autumn. The tree’s crown shape is broad to broad-rounded.  The Japanese crabapple is known for its good disease resistance.

JAPANESE SNOWBELL (Styrax japonicus)

A very dainty tree with gray-brown bark, dark green leaves and white bell-shaped flowers that appear in May and June. The fruit is a white drooping globe appearing in fall. The crown shape becomes flat-topped but spreading as the tree ages.

PAPERBARK MAPLE (Acer griseum)

The habit is that of a small tree, ranging from oval to rounded in outline. Excellent features of interest include the dark bluish green, trifoliate leaves that often turn brilliant red in fall, and the papery thin cinnamon-brown bark that exfoliates year-round and glows in winter light.
