If you’re thinking long term about your yard, trees are often the first thing to come to mind. They provide structure and beauty to the space. Not to mention, countless of environmental benefits. While other trees cap out at certain heights these trees feel like they can grow, and grow. There are many magnificent shade trees, but these will help you get started picking yours out.

  • AMERICAN LINDEN (Tilia americana)

    Exposure: Full sun-Partial sun

    Growth habit: Rounded heart crown

    Height/Spread: 60-80’ & 30-60’

    Distinctive Features: Small white aromatic flowers, and dense green leaves

    Linden, also known as basswood is a native tree. It is known for it’s large, heart shaped leaves that cast a heavy shade. It is very successful as a border plant or a backdrop since it has a tendency to have low branching. In the spring the small flowers emit a nice fragrance.


    • RED OAK (Quercus rubra)

      Exposure: Full sun-partial sun

      Growth habit: Rounded

      Height/Spread: 50-75’, 40-60’

      Distinctive Features: Acorns, Lobed leaves, Fall color

      Red Oaks are stately trees with fantastic shade and fall foliage. These keystone species are native to the east coast of North America. This tree will require a lot of space and will likely live anywhere from 150 to 500 years. The acorns provide a lot of wildlife value.


        TULIP TREE (Liriodendron tulipifera)

        Growth habit: Pyramidal when young rounded when older

        Distinctive Features: spring flowers and leaf shape

        Tulip trees have brilliant fall-foliage, but they get their name from the resemblance their flowers bear to the classic tulip flower. Native to eastern North America grow narrow crowns that spread with age to make ideal shade trees. These fast-growing trees are easily identified by their spring flowers and distinct leaf shapes. The tree also provides wildlife and pollinator value.

        • EUROPEAN BEECH (Fagus sylvatica)

          Growth habit: Upright oval/ rounded

          Height/Spread:50-60’ feet tall & 30-50’ wide

          Distinctive Features: smooth silvery bark, nice fall color

           

          Like it’s counterpart the American Beech, this tree boasts beautiful silvery smooth bark, but it’s canopy is a bit more compact. The dark green leaves give way to a brilliant golden-red fall color. Originally European settlers planted this tree across American for logging.


          • SUGAR MAPLE (Acer saccharum)

            Growth habit: Rounded

            Height/Spread: 40-80’, 30-60’

            Distinctive Features: Iconic leaves, fall color, maple syrup

            Sugar maples are one of the most well known trees for their iconic leaf shape (found on the Canadian flag) and for their precious sap which can be turned into male syrup! These trees are strong and grow steadily, but slowly. They reach maturity after about 50 years. While you wait for them to grow they will produce beautiful fall color year after year.
